The soft 3D printed skin of AIRSKIN® was developed in intensive and month-long collaboration between Blue Danube Robotics and Bernstein™. AIRSKIN® has succeeded in establishing a benchmark in additive manufacturing for industrial applications.
The use of additive manufacturing offers decisive advantages.
AIRSKIN® can be produced from lot size 1 to larger series. This allows the equipment of individual robots as well as of entire production lines.
The system requires a highly complex component geometry, in which 3D printing can utilize its advantages fully.
Blue Danube Robotics is an innovative company that puts emphasis on the continuous development of AIRSKIN®. The use of additive production meets this high demand.
The complex development and continuous optimization of AIRSKIN® requires a holistic consideration of additive manufacturing. In addition to the key process, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), this also includes the upstream and downstream processes such as 3D printing specific design, design optimization and finishing.

For the serial production of AIRSKIN® laser sintering systems have been optimized in cooperation with the LSS engineers. Thanks to the adaptations, they meet the high demands on size accuracy, efficiency and costs.
Together with experts from the chemical company Lehmann & Voss, a special material based on TPU was developed to give the cover of AIRSKIN® ideal properties (flexible, long-lasting, resistant to environmental influences).
The use of a coating adapted to the material’s needs achieves the desired optical and haptic properties. The functionality of the components is thereby further improved.
An individualized quality management process according to ISO9001 was implemented in close coordination with Blue Danube Robotics.
